Multiple Exposure Blending vs High Dynamic Range


Unlike the more consumer-oriented EOS bodies, the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II and its predecessors do not offer an in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature. As a result, the solution I worked towards in order to capture the high dynamic range found in stained glass windows was Multiple Exposure Blending (MEB).

Which ever process is used, a final image is created from a series of bracketed photographs (bracketing referring to taking a set of photographs in which one setting in the exposure triangle (ISO – Aperture – Shutter Speed) is changed. For each window I photograph, 20 images are captured each with a fixed ISO (50), fixed aperture (f/8.0) and varying shutter speeds (at 1/3rd stop increments).

It is possible to have HDR Software apply an algorithm to blend portions of the mages together through tonal mapping, but I much prefer the manual approach of MEB. By using layers in post production, I am able to select the optimum appearance of each glass element within the stained glass window and merge them together into one ‘optimum’ image. While this method is both time-consuming and skill-intensive, it achieves the most accurate results:

Glossary


  • Apse – the often domed, semi-circular or polygonal east end where the altar is located.
  • Calme or Came – Strip of lead H shaped to hold the pieces of glass together, from the Latin calamus, meaning reed.
  • Cartoon – A full size drawing of the design for a stained glass window.
  • Cinquefoil – A five lobed shape.
  • Design – See Vidimus.
  • Diaper – A decorative pattern applied using glass paint to enhance the glass surface.
  • Enamel – A technique developed in the late C15 to allow colours to be painted on to glass.
  • Ferramenta – The metal framework (iron, aluminium, copper, brass) fixed into the masonry to hold panels of stained glass.
  • Flashing – Application of a thin coat of coloured glass on to clear glass – most reds are flashed.
  • Grisaille – Clear or grey glass often decorated with foliage design
  • Grozing – A method of shaping the edges of pieces of glass to the right size using a metal tool known as a grozing iron.
  • Lancet – Tall, narrow windows with a sharp pointed arch at the top.
  • Light – The vertical division of a window.
  • Medallion – Circular panel of several pieces of glass leaded together.
  • Mullion – Upright stone section of a window. Divides the window into a number of lights.
  • Narthex – An antechamber at the western entrance of some churches, separated from the nave by a screen.
  • Nave – the central part of a church building, intended to accommodate most of the congregation.
  • Needlework – Fine relieving done with a needle or sharp instrument, scratching out.
  • Panel – An element of a stained glass window, generally no more than 1m square.  A single windows is, as a rule, made of several panels.
  • Plating – The doubling up of glass by the attachment of an additional layer, held together within a single lead. This can be part of an artistic technique, used as a means of modifying or intensifying colour or texture, or can be used as a protective measure during conservation.
  • Relieving – The removal of paint from the surface of the glass prior to firing, to allow light to come through; methods include needlework and stickwork.
  • Rinceau – Foliage design usually used as a background.
  • Rose – Round windows that often have elaborate tracery and lots of decorated stained glass. They are usually facing the altar.
  • Roundel –  A unipartite panel, generally round, bearing a self-contained design.
  • Quarry – (from French carré, square): a small pane of glass, usually diamond-shaped.  Imitation quarries are glass panels that have lead lines painted on them to simulate the appearance of quarries.
  • Quatrefoil – Windows with four petal shaped sections.
  • Stanchion – A vertical support bar set into the masonry, internally or externally (or both). Used in conjunction with Support Bars, which sometimes have eyes through which a stanchion can pass.
  • Stickwork – Relieving done with the end of a brush or blunt instrument, picking out.
  • Support Bar or Saddle Bar – A bar set horizontally into the masonry, to which stained glass panels are tied with lead or copper ties, supporting and preventing panels from flexing out of the vertical plane.
  • Tie Bar – See Support Bar or Saddle Bar.
  • Tracery – Ornamental stone openwork, typically in the upper part of a Gothic window.
  • Tracery Lights – The small, often ornate openings at the top of a window.
  • Trefoil – Windows with three petal shaped sections.
  • Vestibule – See Narthex.
  • Vidimus – Before the cartoon was drawn, preliminary sketches would be made to show what the finished windows would look like so the design could be approved. The approved design was the Vidimus.  The approved design of a window, before the cartoon is made.  Latin for “we have seen”.

Dorneywood House


A slight deviation to my proposed Research Project found me at the country home of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.  Dorneywood House sits within 215 acres of beautiful gardens in the tranquillity of the Buckinghamshire countryside and was gifted to the Nation in 1942 by the philanthropist Lord Courtauld-Thomson.  The gardens are open to the public for two weeks each summer, but for security reasons photography is forbidden.  Pleasingly this ban was waived for my private tour.

Summerfield (low res)1874 saw the arrival of Courtauld-Thomson, the 137th pupil, at Summerfield (as was the name).  He moved on to Eton in 1879 and from there to Magdalen College, Oxford.  He decided to memorialise the key events of his life with a series of five stained glass windows and in the centre of the five is this lavish and rather touching tribute to his time at Summerfield.  Interestingly, his years at Eton and Magdalen College are squeezed onto a single, rather plain window – for which I spared very little time in post-production.

Learning to See in the Dark

Processing low-light images with minimal noise


Researchers with the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign and Intel have developed a deep neural network that brightens ultra-low light images without adding noise and other artefacts.  The network was trained using 5,094 raw short-exposure low-light and long-exposure image pairs—the end result is a system that automatically brightens images at a much higher quality than traditional processing options.

Vanishing History – St. Hilda’s College Chapel


A visit to St. Hilda’s College Chapel became more urgent than was expected on hearing of its planned demolition within weeks.  It was relieving to discover that there were only two stained glass windows (six lights) within the chapel, eased further by being granted open access to photograph them.  Weather conditions today were perfect: bright, but over cast, the windows were clean and at head height.  This had the makings of a straightforward, yet very poignant photo shoot.  It transpired that I would be the first and last person to photograph (specifically) these windows.

At first glance all looked good and while the two windows were a little too modern in appearance for my liking, each told a clear and simple story.  My initial placement shot revealed the first difficulty:  The stained glass stood in front of much older panelled windows with the panels and window furniture clearly visible:DCP_6475 ce low res

However, head-on, the full horror story became evident…

image1 ce low resEverything could be seen through these stained glass windows.  Even shooting at f/1.2 could not mask the red Ford Focus.

Notwithstanding, I completed the capture of a full set of images, albeit rather car-oriented.  However, I have now entered into delicate negotiations with the College, in order to be granted access to the windows once they have been removed from the chapel, with the hope of photographing them clutter-free.  If my plan comes to fruition, I have only to worry about where I might place the six lights to capture them against a backlit, neutral white background.

Somerville College Chapel


Cartoon For Christ, Somervile Oxford 1935 (low res)Uniquely, this is Oxford’s only un-consecrated chapel.  It has no religious affiliation, so the large Reginald Bell stained glass west window depicting Christ comes as a surprise and juxtaposes the ‘undenominational’ intent of the building.  Unusually, with vivimus approved and cartoon drawn, there was no Somerville chapel.  Indeed, Bell is possibly the only glass-painter to have been commissioned to design a window and then to find an architect to build a chapel to house it.

This had the potential of being a straightforward shoot, with a spacious organ loft positioned at the perfect height for undistorted images. Sadly such plans were ruined by the placement of three chandeliers that followed the central line of the building:

With the chapel having just one stained glass window, and following feedback on my Work in Progress Portfolio, I experimented for the first time with capturing it in two images.  To play safe, I also captured the window as a single image – this I did both from the floor and the organ loft, to the left and to the right of the central line (to avoid the chandeliers).  Multiple exposure blending necessitated a batch of 20 images per shot, so this ‘straightforward’ shoot ended up taking just under an hour and totalled over 150 images.

The combined image was the result of over 15 hours of editing in which there was only the slightest image distortion: lateral offset from the central line produced horizontal convergence, which I opted to correct. The final result had a healthy 25.5MP resolution.

End of an era?

2 flagship film cameras discontinued on the same day…


30 May 2018 marked the end of an era for Leica as they discontinued the M7 film camera after 16 years of service.  However, film lovers will still be able to purchase the Leica MP and Leica M-A cameras.

Just minutes after Leica’s announcement, Canon broke similar news with the discontinuation of their last film camera, the EOS-1V:

So little time…


The summer months have always been my busiest, as during term time, in addition to the routine full days and six-and-a-half day working weeks, I gain substantial other responsibilities leading groups of students for numerous assorted trips, visits and sporting commitments, which also extend into the holiday period.  Consequently the up-coming Module: Surfaces & Strategies will undoubtedly be a challenge, not just in terms of potentially demanding content, but through a dramatic lack of available time.  Hindsight shows that even my annual holiday is shockingly poorly timed!
